The Global Change Leaders training began in 2011-2012, when the International Centre for Women’s Leadership launched the Global Change Leaders program – a certificate course for emerging women leaders from the global south.

Over 1,000 individuals applied for the 15 available spots in the Global Change Leaders Program, 16 candidates were selected .

Amongst the selected candidates are two Safe World for Women Correspondents from Nigeria; Olutosin Oladosu Adebowale and Adepeju Mabadeje Jaiyeoba. Nigeria is the only country with two participants at the training. It is the first time that West Africans have been selected.

Other participants are from India, Ethiopia, Zambia, Pakistan, Tibet, South Africa, Uganda, Papua New Guinea, Thailand Nepal, Philipines, Ghana.

Tosin-and-Adepeju-2Olutosin and AdepejuThe struggle for women’s emancipation has spanned decades, from 1791, which was the declaration of Women’s Rights where Olympiade Gourdes, the playwright and activist was involved before she was beheaded in 1793, through to the period in history in 1914 during the First World War when women took on new roles, to the time of the Second World War when women replaced men in workforce.

Oh! we cannot easily forget the 1950’s when women were able to take control of their fertility and reproductive rights through the development and introduction of birth control pills and groundbreaking Simone De Beavour, Second Sex’s analysis of gender and power. Neither can we sweep under the carpet the works of the Brazilian consciousness raising educator Paulo Freire in the 60s.

The momentum is being sustained by educationists, especially those changemakers supporting the ideology of conscientization; education can be formal informal or semi formal - but conscientization, which is the soul of every education for liberation, has brought tremendous achievement to the early feminists.

To know your history is to value your existence and to continue working for the future is to appreciate what others did prior to your existence. In order to continue in the achievements of feminist set goals, global change leaders working for women in the developing world need to be empowered, so as to be able to face the challenges of the patriarchal and imperialist world.

This brought about the selection of 15 Global change leaders supported by the Canadian Government, CIDA, St Francis Xavier University Halifax and other independent funders. History was re-opened in the Coady Institute when emerging women leaders from the Global South were selected in appreciation of their works in their communities and the opportunity for further training in Women Leadership traced the history of the Women’s Movement.

Unexpectedly, two young Nigerian women made the list - both Nigerian correspondents for Safe World for Women! It is a once in a life time experience, which validates the efforts of these young women at transforming the lives of women and girls in the communities.

Short History of Coady

Coady began its developmental work more than 50 years ago, when Father Moses M. Coady and some other indigenious Canadian came together to make a change in their community and in the world at large. Though Coady has passed away, his legacy lives on.

The Global Change Leaders training began in 2011-2012, when the International Centre for Women’s Leadership launched the Global Change Leaders program – a certificate course for emerging women leaders from the global south.

Through campus-based education, field visits, mentorships and linkages to a global network of other women leaders, the program enables the women to strengthen their leadership capacities to contribute to change in their organizations and communities. Program participants engage in learning themes grounded in real world experiences. Topics covered include transformative leadership concepts, practical leadership skills, citizen-led and asset-based development, and oral and written communications. Through a shared learning environment with other emerging women leaders from around the world, participants are exposed to a range of experiences and the beginnings of a potentially lifelong network of support.

The overall Program Objective is to enable Global Change Leaders to take on more powerful and dynamic leadership roles in their organizations and communities. Specific outcomes for the participants include:

  • Enriched knowledge of self, and importance of this knowledge to one’s own leadership
  • Increased awareness of and capacity in essential competencies of leadership
  • Practical understanding of leadership concepts and the application of these concepts with the participants’ contexts
  • Strengthened capacity for social innovation and breakthrough leadership
  • Enhanced ability to realize sustainable citizen-led and asset-based development
  • Effective and compelling oral and written communications, as well as presentation skills
  • Active participation in a global network of like-minded women leaders
