Kaabong Diaries

Lye-leeching

After more research, I decided to set up a lye leeching barrel. It seems pretty simple: find container, insert stones and grass, add ash and water, leave for a few days - so this is what I am doing.

 Kaabong-gold-2

Karamoja has a ridiculous amount of gold and gemstones... However, even if the locals can get hold of the resources, they have no decent access to markets so usually have to sell to middlemen...

Margaret-nursing-Linnet

One thing that I am still getting used to is how concerned EVERYONE is; I can't limp down the street either in Kampala or Kaabong without a good 90% of people I pass telling me they are sorry...

IWD-in-Kalapata

The day after I arrived in Kaabong happened to be Women's Day, so I squeezed into a bus and we travelled to a remote place called Kalapata, next to the Kenyan border.

Kaabong-mothers

The good news is that the hospital in Kaabong has resumed the partnership with AWARE Uganda and the maternity waiting house has started up again. I'm working on getting media coverage for the jiggers epidemic...

Poverty-in-Kaabong

So the whole running off to rural Uganda to help save the world thing didn't quite go to plan. I'm not too proud to admit that within twenty four hours in Kaabong, I was crying down the phone to my parents having a complete meltdown; in fact I was pretty much ready to call it a day and book a flight back to the UK....

Orchard-harvest

Even in the dry season there is still fruit growing... The orchard is a brilliant project, and I am really looking forward to seeing it in the rainy season with all the fruit ready.... But as with everything here, it is definitely not problem-free...

Removing-jiggers

Jiggers are turning into an epidemic here. They cripple people... One boy had about twenty jiggers extracted. He screamed a lot, unsurprisingly - in the interest of speed Nurse Ajilong was using a scalpel blade to find and expel the horrible wormy things...

Washing-feet

From pretty much the moment we got here, Grace Loumo has been mobbed by the struggling people of Kaabong... Many are offered food and more find a place to talk. The remit of AWARE Uganda basically covers all things relating to women in the region, a huge area of work....

Homestead-by-the-road

We finally reached Kaabong in the night so I bathed and headed to bed. There is no running water or proper electricity so water is boiled and poured into a plastic basin for a shower – taken next to the pit latrine. I won't lie - it was shock that I was not quite prepared for....

Kampala-Traffic

So I have now been in Uganda for about two weeks. Due to car issues I have not yet made it up country. I am still in Kampala, but hopefully this week I will adventure onwards....

Kampala-home

So last time I asked if I should be worried: the answer is a resounding 'no'! I don't know if it is Ugandans specifically or people in Africa in general, but I have met some of the friendliest people ever since I got here... Even strangers are overwhelmingly kind.
