Madonna in Russia

Madonna: "I think art should be political"

During her concert tour of Russia, Madonna gave an interview to Associated Press about the three women, known as Pussy Riot, currently on trial for an unauthorized concert they played in Moscow's Christ the Savior Cathedral in February

"I am against censorship.

My whole career I’ve always promoted freedom of expression, freedom of speech.

So obviously I think what’s happening to them is unfair and I hope that they do not have to serve 7 years in jail - that would be a tragedy

I think that art should be political

I think art through history – historically speaking art always reflects what is going on socially

So for me it is hard to separate the idea of being an artist and being political.
