International Womens Day
Living free from violence is a human right. Yet millions of women and girls around the world encounter rape, domestic abuse, mutilation and other forms of gender-based violence. Too often no one is held accountable for these crimes. With your help, we can urge governments to hold perpetrators responsible and put an end to this cycle of violence against women.

Native American and Alaska Native women are more than 2.5 times more likely to be raped or sexually assaulted than other women in the United States in general. A complex maze of tribal, state and federal jurisdictions allows perpetrators to rape with impunity and in some cases even encourages assaults.

One of the greatest barriers to women’s economic advancement – and consequently the success of broader poverty reduction efforts – is the violence that women face routinely. Not only does such violence impede women?s ability to live full and productive lives, it also hampers their contributions to family, society and economic development. Violence prevents women from going to work, engaging in their communities, and accessing educational opportunities to create better lives for themselves and their children. According to a World Bank report, Colombian women who suffer physical violence have 14 percent lower earnings than women who do not suffer violence. In Nicaragua a study found that children of female victims of violence left school an average of four years earlier than other children. In India a survey revealed that women who experienced even a single incident of violence lost an average of seven working days.
