Dear Friends,

Around the globe, people protest injustice by holding candlelight vigils. This time, in Kabul, we are holding one to protest gender-based violence and the murder of women in our country –  in particular, that of Mah Gul.

Mah Gul was a 20 year old Afghan woman in Herat who was beheaded for refusing to become a prostitute. More than three weeks have passed Mah Gul’s beheading and still, most people have not heard about her story – like that of many other women whose stories of victimization through violence are silenced.

We are hoping that by organizing this candlelight vigil our people and the media will pay attention to this and other cases of injustice towards women, so that the world knows that an Afghan woman’s life is not worthless.
