The Impact of Climate Change on Women and Children in Wakiso, Uganda

Statement - 18th June 2012 - Hope Children's Centre

Climate change has introduced a number of effects in Wakiso district and Hope Children’s Centre in particular in various ways.

In the dry season, the water tables have dropped drastically so that getting water on a regular basis without distorting the water table is rare; as a result, less water available to the communities, and  hence, the need for rainwater storage to be used in the dry season instead of children and women walking long distances to get  safe clean water.

Water bodies have become polluted, thus transferring the polluted water to the storage facilities which require extra water treatment before it can be used by the children and women.

The presence of many unprotected water sources in the area/region has led to many water-borne diseases associated with drinking unsafe water. Once water sources are protected, diseases associated with drinking unsafe water will become eradicated, which will lead to an improvement in general health standards.
