US: Hikers release could facilitate talks
12 Aug 2010
A senior US official says releasing the three Americans detained in Iran on charges of espionage could be conductive to talks between the two countries.
“One thing they might do is return our three hikers. That would be an important gesture. It could lead to better relations,” CNN quoted US President Barack Obama's national security adviser, Gen. James Jones as saying on Wednesday.
Sarah Emily Shourd, 31, Shane Michael Bauer, 27, and Joshua Felix Fattal, 27, were arrested on Iranian soil in July 2009 after crossing the border from the Kurdish mountains of northern Iraq.
They were later charged with espionage after Tehran Prosecutor Abbas Jafari-Dolatabadi found "compelling evidence" that the three US citizens had been cooperating with US intelligence agencies.
The Secretary-General of Iran's High Council for Human Rights Mohammad Javad Larijani has rejected the possibility of swapping the American detainees with Iranians held in US prisons saying, “The exchange is not something that we advocate. Our judicial system does not agree with these kinds of arrangements.”
Ahead of the one-year anniversary of their arrest, Obama said on Saturday that the three had committed no crime and were simply adventurous young people.

UPDATE MARCH 2011
Sarah Shourd was held in solitary confinement in Evin prison, in Iran, for 410 days until her release on bail in September, after a world-wide campaign.
Sarah, her fiance Shane Bauer and their friend Josh Fattal, US citizens, were taken hostage by Iranian security guards in Iraqi Kurdistan in July 2009.
Iranian authorities released Sarah on 'compassionate grounds' but are continuing to hold Shane and Josh. They have been sharing a small cell together for over a year and are currently on trial for espionage.
Shane and Josh are being denied adequate legal access and basic human rights.
